“I believe that imagination is stronger than knowledge. That myth is more potent than history. That dreams are more powerful than facts. That hope always triumphs over experience. That laughter is the only cure for grief. And I believe that love is stronger than death.”

Fleet Week

When I was in college, I worked at a bar called Gatsby’s in the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

One night near the end of Fleet Week about six years ago, a couple of sailors came in during my shift. The only thing I knew about Fleet Week I’d learned from an episode of Sex and the City and so of course I had an unreasonably glamorized version of it in my head. They were a pair of sweet, friendly southern boys barely a year or two older than I was. It was their first time in New York. They asked if I’d mind showing them around and because I’ve never quite been able to abide the “Don’t talk to strangers” rule I obliged.

I honestly can’t remember where I took them or what we did - I have a vague recollection of trying not to grumble through Times Square, but that’s about it. But I do remember one of them very clearly. Some kid the same age and a hundred years older than me. We talked, in every sense of the cliche, til the sun came up about movies we both loved and childhoods and friends and New York and tried to cram what might have been several evenings’ worth of conversation into the limited time at our disposal.

The next day he left. We exchanged numbers. For a while there were frequent phone calls and texts and then you know, time does its funny little dance. you run out of movies to talk about. One of you is on a boat in the middle of the ocean and the other is floundering in everyday life.

But every year, without fail, I will get a text saying “I’m at Gatsby’s! What are you up to these days?”

Sometimes, when you feel like burying yourself in your own cynicism, the universe pops up and says “Get the fuck over it.” in the loveliest way possible. It’s a comforting thought, knowing you can find such genuine, lasting friends under the most random of circumstances.

So yes, belated, but Happy Memorial Day.

“I’m writing this letter in a tiny room at a tiny desk near a tiny bed next to a tiny bookcase beside a tiny closet, none of which have the slightest decorative touch, and all of which are designed to meet the minimum functional requirements. On the desk is a fluorescent lamp, a teacup, the stationary for writing this letter, and a dictionary. To be honest, I almost never use the dictionary. I just don’t like dictionaries. I don’t like the way they look, and I don’t like what they say inside. Whenever I use a dictionary, I make a face and think, Who needs to know that? Say I look up “transition” and it says: “passage from one state to another.” I think, So what? It’s got nothing to do with me. So when I see a dictionary on my desk I feel like I’m looking at some strange dog leaving a twisty piece of poop on our lawn out back.”
